Assiniboine Park is one of Winnipeg's greatest assets. Starting in 1905 from 283 acres, the park has grown to be an 1100 acre (445 hectare) gem.

The assiniboinepark.com website is again being updated, and a major change is planned. Check back frequently.

Recent Controversy

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz announced a plan to sell part of Assiniboine Park to developers for high-rise condos. The proceeds would go to the park, at the loss of two parking lots. Whether the loss is the thin edge of a wedge that would see the park further carved up in the future remains open to speculation. A precedent will have been set. Conceivably, the whole thing could be put up for sale to the highest bidder to do whatever they like with it.

My personal view is that no part of the park should be sold off for any reason. It is a public trust, for all Winnipegers and guests. That Mayor Katz floated the idea says nothing against him. As mayor, he should be floating ideas. Reaction from the public and other interested parties will show if any particular idea is appropriate or not. Shaving bits off the park is not appropiate to me.

It is a controversy, however, as money is needed to maintain and upgrade Assiniboine Park and it's facilities and infrastructure. What is to be done?

Winter is Here

Winter has arived, but the park is not closed. There is still much to see and do. From now until December 4, you can catch the Festival of Trees & Lights. And of course enjoy a great meal at either of two restaurants, do some sightseeing and people watching, or check out the critters at the zoo. If you love summer, it's always summer inside the Conservatory.
